Since 2012, the Protection of Freedoms Act has had a big impact on the way that local authorities undertake all RIPA activity.
The most significant changes are that authorisations must meet a 'serious crime' threshold and require ‘judicial approval’ prior to the activity taking place and again at certain stages through the life of the authorisation.
As a result, some local authorities have steered away from RIPA. This is a big mistake as the legislation offers valuable protection but it is important that you understand it.
All of our RIPA courses include an update on how these changes impact upon the application, the authorisation and operational activity or we can deliver a standalone training session on this act alone and we examine these changes in detail so that staff understand what this means at a practical level.
We can also deliver training, which includes practical exercises, for staff whom do not have experience in obtaining judicial approval for their activity so that they are prepared when they are required to appear before a magistrate to obtain approval.
Our highly qualified trainers are all very experienced in RIPA activities and have all appeared in various courts to obtain judicial approval for applications so they understand first-hand the processes involved.
